  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

  • Canadian Experience Class 선발
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Provincial Nominee Program

Canada’s 2026 Express Entry Categories: Which Occupations Are Being Prioritized?

Canada updated its Express Entry category-based selection priorities for 2026.

The renewed categories include French-language proficiency and work experience in health care and social services, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, trade occupations and education occupations.

Transport occupations have been introduced as a new occupational category.

Canada has also created separate categories for physicians, researchers and senior managers who have qualifying Canadian work experience, as well as a specialized category for skilled foreign military recruits.

Being employed in one of these occupations does not automatically result in an invitation to apply for permanent residence.

A candidate must first qualify for an immigration program managed through Express Entry, enter the Express Entry pool and meet the specific requirements of the category.

Eligible candidates within the category are then ranked by their Comprehensive Ranking System score.

This article provides general information and does not describe a particular candidate or immigration case.

What is category-based selection?

Express Entry manages applications for the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program.

IRCC may conduct different types of invitation rounds.

In a general round, eligible candidates with the highest CRS scores may be invited.

In a program-specific round, IRCC invites candidates who qualify for a particular immigration program.

In a category-based round, IRCC first identifies candidates who satisfy a designated language, occupation, education or economic-priority category.

Those candidates are still ranked according to CRS scores, and the highest-ranking candidates may receive invitations.

Category-based selection is therefore not a separate permanent residence program. It is a method of selecting candidates who are already in the Express Entry pool.

The current 2026 categories

The current categories are:

  1. French-language proficiency
  2. Health care and social services occupations
  3. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics occupations
  4. Trade occupations
  5. Education occupations
  6. Transport occupations
  7. Physicians with Canadian work experience
  8. Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  9. Researchers with Canadian work experience
  10. Skilled military recruits

Each category has separate requirements.

A candidate should not rely only on a job title that appears similar to an occupation listed by IRCC.

The NOC code, actual duties, location of the work experience and duration of the experience must be reviewed.

New categories in 2026

The new categories announced for 2026 include:

  • transport occupations;
  • physicians with Canadian work experience;
  • researchers with Canadian work experience;
  • senior managers with Canadian work experience; and
  • eligible skilled foreign military applicants recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces.

The eligibility rules are not the same across these groups.

The transport category may accept qualifying work experience obtained in Canada or abroad.

The physician, researcher and senior-manager categories specifically require qualifying Canadian work experience.

Transport occupations

The transport category currently includes:

  • aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors;
  • air pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors;
  • aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors; and
  • automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics, and mechanical repairers.

The category does not cover every employee working in transportation, logistics or delivery.

The exact NOC and the applicant’s principal duties must match an occupation designated by IRCC.

Health care and social services

This category includes a broad range of occupations, such as:

  • physicians and surgeons;
  • dentists;
  • pharmacists;
  • psychologists;
  • nurses;
  • physiotherapists and occupational therapists;
  • medical technologists and technicians;
  • dental hygienists;
  • pharmacy technicians and assistants;
  • social workers; and
  • social and community service workers.

Immigration eligibility does not automatically provide authorization to practise a regulated health profession in Canada.

Provincial licensing may still be required after immigration.

STEM occupations

The 2026 STEM category currently includes selected occupations such as:

  • architecture and science managers;
  • cybersecurity specialists;
  • civil, mechanical, electrical and industrial engineers;
  • geological engineers;
  • engineering technologists and technicians; and
  • insurance agents and brokers.

The use of the term STEM does not mean that every technology, computer or scientific occupation is included.

The candidate must verify that the exact NOC appears in the current IRCC list.

Trade occupations

The trade category includes selected construction, industrial and maintenance occupations, including:

  • construction managers and estimators;
  • machinists;
  • welders;
  • electricians;
  • plumbers;
  • carpenters;
  • cabinetmakers;
  • bricklayers;
  • industrial mechanics;
  • heavy-duty equipment mechanics;
  • heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanics;
  • concrete finishers;
  • roofers;
  • painters;
  • floor covering installers; and
  • certain butcher occupations.

Immigration selection and provincial trade certification are separate matters.

A candidate may qualify for immigration while still needing provincial certification before working independently in the trade.

Education occupations

The education category currently includes:

  • secondary school teachers;
  • elementary school and kindergarten teachers;
  • early childhood educators and assistants;
  • instructors of persons with disabilities; and
  • elementary and secondary school teacher assistants.

Foreign teaching experience may help satisfy the category requirement.

However, provincial teacher licensing or early-childhood certification may still be required to work in Canada.

French-language proficiency

The French-language category is based on approved language-test results rather than an occupation.

A candidate generally needs a minimum NCLC level 7 in all four French-language abilities:

  • speaking;
  • listening;
  • reading; and
  • writing.

Meeting the French requirement does not replace the need to qualify for an Express Entry immigration program.

The candidate must also satisfy the requirements stated for the particular invitation round.

The work-experience requirement increased

For the renewed occupational categories and the transport category, a candidate generally needs at least 12 months of full-time work experience, or an equivalent amount of part-time experience, in one listed occupation during the previous three years.

The work experience does not necessarily need to be continuous.

The previous six-month requirement used for certain 2025 categories was increased to one year for 2026.

Candidates should confirm:

  • that the experience was gained within the last three years;
  • that it totals at least 12 months;
  • that it was obtained in one designated occupation;
  • that the hours are equivalent to the required full-time experience; and
  • that the duties match the selected NOC.

Foreign and Canadian work experience

The general health care, STEM, trade, education and transport categories may accept qualifying work experience obtained in Canada or abroad.

A person with qualifying experience from South Korea or another country may therefore be eligible for one of these categories.

The separate categories for physicians, researchers and senior managers require qualifying work experience obtained in Canada.

Foreign experience alone will not satisfy the Canadian-work-experience requirement of those specific categories.

Physicians with Canadian experience

The physician category currently includes:

  • specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine;
  • specialists in surgery; and
  • general practitioners and family physicians.

Candidates generally need at least 12 months of qualifying Canadian work experience in the previous three years.

Professional licensing and immigration selection remain separate.

Researchers with Canadian experience

The researcher category currently covers:

  • university professors and lecturers; and
  • post-secondary teaching and research assistants.

Not every laboratory employee, corporate researcher or research-related occupation is included.

The person’s NOC and actual Canadian duties must be reviewed.

Senior managers with Canadian experience

This category includes selected senior managers in:

  • financial, communications and business services;
  • health, education, social and community services;
  • trade, broadcasting and other services; and
  • construction, transportation, production and utilities.

A job title such as manager, director, president or executive does not automatically establish eligibility.

The duties must correspond to the designated senior-management NOC, and qualifying Canadian work experience is required.

Skilled military recruits

This category is not a general category for anyone who previously completed military service.

It applies to eligible foreign skilled military applicants who satisfy specific service, education, occupation and Canadian Armed Forces employment requirements.

Ordinary compulsory military service does not automatically create eligibility.

Does category eligibility guarantee an invitation?

No.

A candidate must:

  1. qualify for a program managed through Express Entry;
  2. maintain a valid Express Entry profile;
  3. satisfy the category requirements;
  4. wait for IRCC to conduct a round for that category;
  5. have a sufficiently competitive CRS score; and
  6. satisfy the tie-breaking rule and instructions for the round.

IRCC ranks eligible candidates within the category by CRS score.

Category eligibility creates an opportunity to participate in that type of invitation round. It does not create a guaranteed invitation.

Is CRS still important?

Yes.

A category-based round may have a different cut-off score from a general round, and in some cases the score may be lower.

However, there is no permanent guaranteed cut-off for a category.

The score depends on:

  • the number of eligible candidates;
  • their CRS scores;
  • the number of invitations issued;
  • how frequently the category is selected; and
  • IRCC’s annual immigration priorities.

Past invitation scores should not be treated as a promise of a future invitation.

Is a new profile required?

A person with an accurate and valid Express Entry profile does not generally need to create a separate profile solely for category-based selection.

IRCC uses the information in the profile to identify candidates who satisfy a category.

The candidate should keep the following information accurate:

  • work history;
  • NOC codes;
  • dates and locations of employment;
  • language results;
  • education;
  • marital status;
  • immigration status;
  • provincial nomination; and
  • contact and passport information.

An invitation based on inaccurate profile information may lead to refusal when supporting documents are reviewed.

Choosing the correct NOC

The correct NOC is determined primarily by the person’s actual duties, not only by the internal job title used by an employer.

Candidates should compare:

  • their principal duties;
  • the NOC lead statement;
  • the listed main duties;
  • level of responsibility;
  • supervisory functions;
  • technical functions; and
  • employer documentation.

Selecting an NOC simply because it appears in a preferred category can create eligibility and misrepresentation concerns.

Is a job offer required?

A Canadian job offer is not required for every category-based candidate.

The underlying Express Entry program or a specialized category may have separate requirements.

In addition, as of March 25, 2025, Express Entry no longer awards the previous 50 or 200 CRS points for job offers.

A job offer may still be relevant to eligibility under a particular immigration program or to a candidate’s employment plans, but it no longer automatically produces the former additional CRS points.

What if the occupation is not in a category?

A candidate whose occupation is not included in a current category may still receive an invitation through:

  • general rounds;
  • Canadian Experience Class rounds;
  • Federal Skilled Worker rounds;
  • Federal Skilled Trades rounds;
  • Provincial Nominee Program rounds; or
  • another applicable program-specific round.

Category-based selection is only one part of Express Entry.

The absence of an occupation from the category list does not automatically make the candidate ineligible for Express Entry.

After receiving an invitation

A candidate who receives an invitation generally has 60 days to submit the permanent residence application.

IRCC may verify:

  • eligibility for the underlying immigration program;
  • the accuracy of the Express Entry profile;
  • category eligibility;
  • work-experience evidence;
  • language and education records;
  • admissibility; and
  • consistency with previous immigration applications.

The candidate must be able to document the work experience used to qualify for the category.

Work-reference evidence

An employer reference letter may need to show:

  • the employer’s identity and contact information;
  • the applicant’s name;
  • employment dates;
  • job title;
  • working hours;
  • salary and benefits;
  • detailed duties; and
  • the name and signature of the authorized employer representative.

A basic certificate showing only the title and dates may not provide enough information to establish the NOC.

Final point

Canada’s 2026 Express Entry categories place renewed emphasis on French-language ability and selected health care, STEM, trade and education occupations.

Transport occupations have been added, along with separate Canadian-experience categories for physicians, researchers and senior managers.

Most occupational categories now require at least 12 months of qualifying experience in one listed occupation during the previous three years.

Category eligibility does not guarantee an invitation. Candidates must qualify for an Express Entry immigration program, meet the category requirements and remain competitive under the CRS.

A candidate whose occupation is not included may still receive an invitation through a general or program-specific round.
