English Version
Can insurance purchased in Korea satisfy Canada's super visa requirements?
Insurance issued by a company outside Canada may qualify, but an ordinary travel policy purchased in Korea is not automatically acceptable. The insurer and the policy terms matter more than where the product was purchased or what it is called.
Since January 28, 2025, IRCC has accepted qualifying policies from certain foreign insurers. Both the old assertion that only Canadian insurers are allowed and the blanket assertion that any Korean travel policy will do are incomplete. IRCC policy change notice
1. Identify the actual insurer
A comparison website or insurance broker may have a different name from the company underwriting the policy. IRCC asks applicants to identify the issuing insurer or underwriter. Brokers and claims administrators are not themselves insurance companies. Their trading names alone do not establish eligibility. IRCC insurance documentation
For a foreign insurer, verify that it is authorized by Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to provide accident and sickness insurance, appears on OSFI's list of federally regulated financial institutions, and issues the policy through its insurance business in Canada. A well-known international brand does not make every policy sold by that group eligible. IRCC foreign-insurer conditions
2. Check the policy itself
| Item | Core requirement |
|---|---|
| Duration | At least one year from entry into Canada |
| Emergency coverage | At least CAD 100,000 |
| Scope | Health care, hospitalization and repatriation |
| Payment | Paid in full, or instalments with a deposit |
| Entry | Valid for each entry and available for inspection on request |
A quotation is not accepted as proof of insurance. A foreign insurer's policy must also state that the document was issued or made while the company was doing insurance business in Canada. IRCC policy details
3. Recheck coverage when travel plans change
Consider a hypothetical parent who arranged coverage for an October arrival but postpones travel until December. Before relying on the original document, check whether coverage still meets the required period from actual entry. Ask the insurer how to change the effective date and obtain updated documents.
Having a one-year policy on arrival does not eliminate the need to consider insurance during a longer stay. IRCC says super visa holders should maintain valid insurance throughout their stay and may need to renew coverage before leaving Canada. It must be valid for each entry. IRCC ongoing coverage guidance
4. Separate immigration compliance from coverage expectations
Meeting the minimum insured amount does not mean every treatment a family expects will be covered. Before purchasing, obtain written explanations of pre-existing-condition terms, exclusions, deductibles, claims procedures and cancellation, refund or travel-change provisions.
This is a preparation framework rather than a recommendation of an insurer or product. It helps align the documentation needed for immigration purposes with the family's expectations about medical protection. Ask the insurer or an appropriately qualified insurance professional to explain the actual policy.
5. Request documents that identify the actual contract
A sales statement that a product is popular with super visa applicants is not enough to assess a particular policy. Request documents showing the product and the actual issuing insurer. The company on a sales website, the merchant on a card statement and the insurer on the policy may have different roles.
Ask where to find the policy wording, payment evidence, coverage period and limits, and any statement required for a foreign-issued policy. Compare the insurer's exact legal name across the policy and regulatory information. A similar group name or an intermediary's name should not end the inquiry. Keep the original documents and check the applicable translation instructions for anything submitted in another language. Korean-language customer support can be convenient, but does not resolve the documentary questions.
6. Compare two hypothetical family preparations
Family A receives an inexpensive travel-insurance leaflet from a Korean travel agency. It prominently displays a coverage amount, but does not clearly identify the insurer or explain coverage from the intended entry date. The correct next step is to obtain the contract information. The leaflet alone does not justify either a confident rejection or proceeding as though every requirement has been demonstrated.
Family B obtains a policy and payment confirmation and checks the relevant insurer and policy requirements. The mother's departure is then delayed by two months. They need to revisit the dates and amendment process instead of relying on the earlier review.
These are illustrative scenarios, not customer histories or product endorsements. They show why choosing a policy and finalizing a trip are connected tasks. Buying insurance, filing the visa application and booking flights independently can leave inconsistent dates that nobody notices until departure.
7. Record the location of the evidence
When several family members help prepare documents, note the actual page and wording rather than passing along a verbal assurance that everything is covered.
| Review item | Documents to compare | Useful note |
|---|---|---|
| Insurer and insured person | Policy and insurer information | Exact legal name and spelling of the applicant's name |
| Entry and coverage dates | Travel plan and policy | Who handles amendments if travel changes |
| Payment | Receipt and instalment agreement | Deposit and next payment arrangements |
| Coverage and exclusions | Policy and complete wording | Relevant clauses and questions to resolve |
| Foreign-insurer requirements | Policy statement and qualification information | Matching issuer and date checked |
| Documents for travel | Final policy, contacts and payment record | Copies carried by the parent and retained by family |
This is a method of organizing the evidence, not an additional set of immigration requirements. If a sales answer appears inconsistent with the policy, request a written explanation before travel. Check the document itself to distinguish a quotation from an issued contract. A filename containing “super visa” does not settle that question.
8. Ask practical questions about treatment and claims
Discuss existing conditions, medication, recent treatment or investigations, deductibles and the claims process with the insurance professional. Use the insurer's appropriate private channel for medical information. Avoid treating a general statement about medical coverage as a promise that every anticipated expense will be reimbursed.
Ask whom a parent should contact if symptoms arise shortly after arrival, whether payment may be required upfront and what receipts or medical records must be retained. Request answers tied to the actual contract. Someone reviewing immigration documents cannot promise a particular insurance claim outcome.
For the travelling parent, prepare a short contact sheet with the policy number, assistance contact and a family member who can help communicate. This does not amend the contract. It simply makes the important information easier to locate during a stressful situation. Review it together before departure rather than relying on the parent to navigate a long policy for the first time during an emergency.
9. Run separate submission and departure checks
Before filing, compare names and travel plans across the application, policy and payment documents. Date the files and identify the final version when something changes. The parent, child and insurance contact should not be relying on different copies.
Before departure, check the actual planned entry date, final coverage dates, payment position and the contact channel to use in Canada. Revisit the requirements and contract arrangements if a longer visit or later re-entry is planned. The visa's validity and the policy's coverage period are different items.
For a preliminary inquiry, provide the insurer's name, whether an actual policy has been issued, planned entry, coverage dates and payment arrangement. These details are more useful than simply asking whether “Korean insurance” works. Start with that summary instead of sending a complete medical history or passport number. Submit further documents through the channel advised for the review.
10. Insurance is only part of the application
The host's Canadian status, residence, income, invitation and relationship to the applicant also matter. The applicant generally applies from outside Canada and must meet medical examination and admissibility requirements. IRCC also considers the visit's purpose and the applicant's ties to the home country, family and finances. IRCC super visa eligibility
For a preliminary inquiry, tell Yujin Visa Immigration the host's status, the parent's current country of residence, intended arrival and duration of stay, and whether insurance has been arranged. This allows the overall application requirements and sequence to be reviewed before treating insurance as the only outstanding step. Contact
