예를 들어 University of Waterloo는 현재

👉 University of Waterloo — Immigration Consulting

International Student Services Immigration Advising Immigration Consulting International Experience

👉 IRCC — Work off campus as an international student

Study Permit

👉 IRCC — Extend your study permit or restore your status

  • Study Permit

👉 IRCC — Post-graduation work permit: Who can apply

Canadian Study Permit Extensions and PGWPs: Check Your School’s Immigration Advising Services Before Struggling Alone

International students in Canada often have questions about extending a Study Permit, applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), maintaining legal status, or complying with the conditions attached to their immigration documents.

Because tuition and living expenses are already significant, some students are understandably reluctant to pay for outside professional assistance. Instead, they may spend considerable time trying to resolve immigration questions through online searches or informal advice.

There is nothing inherently wrong with preparing your own application.

A student who understands the eligibility requirements and required documentation may be able to prepare a Study Permit extension or PGWP application independently.

However, if there is an issue that goes beyond simply completing an application — for example, concerns about previous work hours, status, enrolment history or compliance with Study Permit conditions — there may be another resource worth checking first:

your own university or college.

Do Canadian universities provide immigration advice to international students?

Some Canadian universities and colleges provide dedicated immigration advising services for international students.

For example, the University of Waterloo currently states that it has a team of Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) licensed by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). Waterloo describes its consultations as free and confidential.

👉 University of Waterloo — Immigration Consulting

This means that an international student with an immigration question does not necessarily need to begin by hiring an outside representative.

Students can first check their school website for services with names such as:

International Student Services Immigration Advising Immigration Consulting International Experience

The services available vary from one institution to another, so students should confirm both the qualifications of the advisor and the scope of advice the school provides.

A Waterloo student was concerned about previous working hours

A University of Waterloo student recently contacted us because of concerns about previous working hours.

The student was worried that they might have worked beyond the hours permitted to an international student and wanted to know whether this could later affect a Study Permit extension or another immigration application.

This type of question cannot necessarily be answered simply by asking:

“I worked a few extra hours. Is that okay?”

The relevant facts may include when the work occurred, whether it was during a regular academic term or a scheduled break, whether the student met the requirements to work off campus at the time, and what conditions applied to the Study Permit.

Rather than immediately recommending that the student retain outside paid representation, we suggested first speaking with the University of Waterloo immigration consulting service about the specific circumstances.

Where a student already has access to qualified immigration support through their university, using that resource first can be a practical approach.

How many hours can an international student work off campus?

As of August 2026, eligible international students may generally work up to 24 hours per week off campus during regular academic terms or semesters. Eligible students may work unlimited hours off campus during a scheduled break recognized by their designated learning institution.

👉 IRCC — Work off campus as an international student

The 24-hour limit should not be considered in isolation.

IRCC states that working more than the permitted 24 hours during a regular academic term is a violation of Study Permit conditions and may affect the student's status or future Study Permit or Work Permit applications.

At the same time, not every period of employment is assessed under exactly the same rule.

For example, different rules may apply during an eligible scheduled break. A student reviewing previous employment should therefore look not only at the total number of hours worked but also at the specific dates, the school's academic calendar, the student's enrolment status and the conditions that applied at the time.

Can your school help with a Study Permit extension?

If a school provides immigration advising, questions about a Study Permit extension may fall within the services available to students.

IRCC explains that students who wish to continue studying in Canada may need to apply to extend their Study Permit and should pay attention to the permit's expiry date.

👉 IRCC — Extend your study permit or restore your status

Students may have questions such as:

  • When should I apply for my Study Permit extension?
  • Is my passport valid long enough?
  • What documents do I need from my school?
  • What happens to my status while an application is being processed?
  • Does a change in my enrolment history affect my application?

If these questions become difficult to resolve independently, checking whether the school offers immigration advising can be a useful first step.

Does graduating automatically make a student eligible for a PGWP?

No.

A PGWP is not automatically issued simply because a student graduates.

IRCC currently sets a number of eligibility requirements. General requirements include completing an eligible program at a PGWP-eligible designated learning institution, generally maintaining full-time student status during the program, applying within 180 days after receiving confirmation that the program was completed, and meeting any applicable program-specific requirements. Depending on the program and relevant application dates, language and field-of-study requirements may also apply.

👉 IRCC — Post-graduation work permit: Who can apply

For that reason, students should not necessarily wait until after graduation to begin reviewing PGWP eligibility.

If there have been changes in enrolment, leaves from studies or other unusual circumstances, it can be useful to ask questions before reaching the end of the program.

Can a school immigration advisor handle every immigration problem?

Not necessarily.

The scope of university immigration services varies, and some situations may require a more detailed review than a school advising service can provide.

Examples may include:

  • possible non-compliance with Study Permit conditions
  • expired immigration status
  • concerns about information previously provided to IRCC
  • a request from IRCC for additional information or an explanation
  • a previous refusal
  • complicated immigration or status history

In those situations, a student can first determine what the school's immigration service is able to address. If the issue falls outside that scope, the student can then consider obtaining additional advice from a qualified outside professional.

School-based advising and private professional assistance are not necessarily competing options.

The appropriate level of assistance depends on the nature and complexity of the student's situation.

What should you do if the cost of immigration advice is a concern?

If you are concerned about a Study Permit, PGWP or work-related immigration issue but are hesitant to seek paid assistance, a practical sequence is:

First, check your school's website. Look for International Student Services, Immigration Advising or a similar service.

Second, confirm the advisor's qualifications and scope of service. Find out what type of immigration advice the school is authorized and prepared to provide.

Third, organize your records before the appointment. Relevant documents may include your Study Permit, passport, enrolment records, employment records and correspondence from IRCC.

Fourth, determine whether the issue falls outside the school's service. If the matter involves a more complicated compliance or status issue, additional professional assistance may then be appropriate.

Use the immigration resources already available to you

International students are not required to use a representative simply because they need to extend a Study Permit or apply for a PGWP.

Some students can prepare their applications themselves. Others may be able to obtain appropriate guidance through immigration services already provided by their university or college.

For students, professional fees are a real consideration.

Rather than remaining uncertain simply because paying for outside help is difficult, check first whether qualified immigration assistance is already available through your school.

If the issue turns out to be more complex than the school can address, you can then decide what additional level of assistance is appropriate.

The objective is not to insist that every student apply alone or that every student hire a representative.

It is to understand the issue accurately and use the appropriate resources in the right order.
